From the meeting
The bill required the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to conduct an evaluation of the short- and long-term effects of water use by large-scale data centers on drinking water systems, wastewater systems, and the environment. The study had to cover the preceding three years, the preceding seven years, future facilities, water reduction efforts, costs, and infrastructure upgrades, and DEP could require data from owners or operators and utilities. DEP had to report its findings to the Governor and the Legislature within 15 months of the act's effective date.
The Assembly passed the bill 76-0-1 on 2026-10-29; the mandate remained a time-limited State cost increase.
