The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo’s Center for Maunakea Stewardship plans a $1.2 million project to decommission three underground fuel storage tanks and associated piping at Halepōhaku and replace them with two aboveground storage tanks (ASTs). The project is driven by a Hawaiʻi Department of Health underground storage tank regulation requiring compliance by July 15, 2028, and is now through environmental review with a Final EA and FONSI published April 8, 2026. The scope includes removal of USTs, excavation and backfilling, installation of Transtank Pro P122 or similar double‑walled AST units with integrated dispensing, new concrete containment slab and berm, erosion controls, invasive species controls, archaeological monitoring, and habitat restoration plantings. A schedule in the application shows Site Plan Approval to be secured in 2026, an Invitation for Bids drafted and issued in late 2026, and construction running through 2027–mid‑2028. This is an upcoming construction and fuel systems contract where UH will need a qualified contractor and possibly suppliers for ASTs, civil work, environmental sampling, and monitoring.

The Council is accepting a donation from 1582 Medical Group of approximately 150 National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1582-compliant medical examinations for the Fire Department, valued at about $131,250. This indicates the County will be working with 1582 Medical Group to deliver specialized occupational health exams aligned with NFPA standards to its firefighters. While this donation covers a specific set of exams, it highlights the Fire Department’s engagement with NFPA 1582-compliant medical services and related health and safety programs. Vendors providing occupational health, fitness-for-duty evaluations, health data management, and follow-on wellness or risk-reduction services may find opportunities for additional contracted work after the donated exams are completed.

The Hawai‘i County Council Finance Committee agenda includes Resolution 586-26 to authorize the Planning Department to award $142,000 in Kīlauea Recovery Grant Program funds to Pōhaku Pelemaka. The funds are intended to support relief, recovery, mitigation, and long-term resilience activities related to damage and losses from the 2018 Kīlauea eruption. This indicates that Pōhaku Pelemaka will be implementing a defined scope of disaster recovery and resilience work funded by the County’s recovery grant program, with the Planning Department overseeing the award. While the primary grant recipient is already identified, vendors offering disaster recovery consulting, resilience planning, construction, or community services may find partnership, subcontracting, or complementary project opportunities with Pōhaku Pelemaka or the Planning Department as this program advances and similar grants are deployed.
