From the meeting
Governor Gavin Newsom's October 27, 2026 executive order directed a Highway 1 Task Force to assess the corridor's vulnerability to sea-level rise, coastal erosion, landslides, and stronger storms. The task force was told to develop an assessment and recommendations for the Governor's Office by December 15, 2026, including a prioritized list of actions, funding needs, maintenance needs, and ways to streamline planning and permitting. Caltrans was also directed to keep monitoring landslide risk and to request Federal Highway Administration Emergency Relief Program assistance when storm conditions warrant it.
The order also called for a long-term adaptation strategy through the Big Sur Coast Highway Management Plan.
