The College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences and Graduate College are launching a new 6‑credit Micro‑Certificate in Biomedical Innovation in Fall 2027, built around two new core Biomedical Engineering courses (Core Innovation I & II). The program forms cross‑disciplinary teams of engineering, clinical, and health science students to identify unmet clinical needs and develop MedTech concepts, culminating in SBIR/STTR‑style deliverables, pitch decks, and engagement with external partners. The initiative aims to leverage UVM’s integrated health sciences campus and the Center for Biomedical Innovation, with plans to raise about 10,000 annually for student projects and to grow to at least five team projects via departmental, endowment, industry, and grant funds.While the curricular structure and internal facilities are defined, there are clear openings for partnerships with industry, incubators, and funding organizations, as well as for tools supporting prototyping, project management, IP education, and startup formation, offering entry points for vendors and external collaborators into UVM’s MedTech pipeline.

Program anticipates partnerships with organizations like VCET, Beta Technologies, UVM Health Network, and external funders; SBIR/STTR‑style outputs are central to the model.
