On June 12, 2026, the Michigan State University Board of Trustees authorized the administration to proceed with the “Anaerobic Digestor Expansion and Renewable Natural Gas Facility Addition” with a project budget of 27700000. This follows Consumers Energy’s withdrawal from a previously proposed long‑term agreement to develop the RNG treatment facility, prompting MSU to commission renewable energy consultants to validate the business model for MSU to own and operate the facility.The project will double the capacity of the existing anaerobic digester to handle increased organic waste from the expanded Dairy Teaching and Research Facility and construct a new RNG facility immediately west of the digester to upgrade biogas to pipeline‑quality RNG for sale and distribution. MSU will own, operate, and maintain the facility, using revenues from RNG and environmental attribute sales, along with potential federal tax credits, to service long‑term debt financing. For vendors, this is an active large‑scale capital and energy infrastructure project where design, construction, equipment supply, controls, monitoring, and ongoing operations support for anaerobic digestion and gas upgrading systems will be needed as MSU moves from authorization into procurement and implementation.

Project supports MSU’s 2030 Strategic Plan and Michigan climate-change mitigation goals, targeting at least 20000 metric tons CO2e reduction annually with potential up to 40000 metric tons as new technologies are implemented.
