Since 2020, the Regional District of East Kootenay has contracted with the District of Sparwood to provide fire protection in the Upper Elk Valley, paying escalating annual fees plus capital contributions. The agreement also leases an RDEK-owned water tender to Sparwood for $1 per year and outlines cost-sharing for Fire Hall #2 upgrades.
