RFTA staff, under Board direction, has convened a regional Trail Safety Task Force with two large meetings held in April and May 2026 involving member jurisdictions, Garfield County, parks and trails staff, and emergency services. The group has identified top safety concerns on trails, pathways, and sidewalks—including e‑bike classifications, helmets, dogs off leash, speed, inconsistent signage, courtesy, enforcement variability, and education gaps—and has compiled potential near‑, mid‑, and long‑term solutions. A smaller working group will meet every two weeks through June, July, and August 2026 to assess near‑term solutions’ viability, with monthly meetings starting in fall 2026 to develop and implement regional mid‑ and long‑term improvements. While there is no defined budget yet, this emerging program points to future needs for design and fabrication of consistent signage, public education/marketing campaigns, enforcement support tools, and potentially infrastructure upgrades on the Rio Grande Trail and related facilities.
