At the June 1, 2026 Committee of the Whole, the Police Chief and an officer presented a proposal for the department to acquire and operate a Skydio X10 drone via a three-year Axon contract. The program would address current reliance on mutual aid drones, which Wyoming has used more than 20 times in the past year for suspect searches, missing persons, event monitoring, and scene documentation. The proposed Axon package totals about 31500 over three years and includes the drone, software, data storage, warranty, and support, with about 1000 in initial training and FAA certification costs, and ongoing software and data costs beyond the initial term.Council members expressed support for the concept and requested a public safety committee meeting to educate residents on uses, policies, and privacy protections. The City Manager indicated the purchase will be considered as part of the 2027 budget process and that the June session was intended to gather feedback before moving forward. This presents an early-stage opportunity for vendors providing UAS hardware, software, training, policy consulting, and integration with existing public safety systems to engage with the department, either as competitors to Axon/Skydio or as complementary providers for training, data management, or policy and community outreach support.

Council is sensitive to privacy, data retention, and community education; a public information session will precede any launch, and data management obligations will extend beyond the initial contract term.
